Welcome to course website for ENGL 2225-001 SCIENCE FICTION, with your professor, Dr. Swanstrom. This class considers a diverse selection of science fiction, from its early origins to the present day. We will study the historical development of this important literary genre in order to grapple with the following set of questions: What common themes, motifs, and images recur in science fiction? How does science fiction shape our understanding of culture and society? How does it respond to, challenge, or perpetuate particular social, political, and cultural institutions in America and abroad? And–perhaps most important of all–in a world of increasing ecological fragility, how might SF offer new frameworks for thinking about our shared environment in the future?
